Using radio emission to detect isolated and quiescent accreting black holes

چکیده
We discuss the implications of new relations between black holes’ masses, Xray luminosities and radio luminosities, as well as the properties of the next generation of radio telescopes, for the goal of finding isolated accreting black holes. Because accreting black holes have radio-to-X-ray flux ratios that increase with decreasing luminosity in Eddington units, and because deep surveys over large fields of view should be possible with planned instrumentation such as LOFAR, radio surveys should be significantly more efficient than X-ray surveys for finding these objects.

A Scheme to Unify Low-Power Accreting Black Holes Jet-Dominated Accretion Flows and the Radio/X-Ray Correlation
We explore the evolution in power of black holes of all masses, and their associated jets, within the scheme of an accretion rate-dependent state transition. Below a critical value of the accretion rate all systems are assumed to undergo a transition to a state where the dominant accretion mode is optically thin and radiatively inefficient. In these significantly sub-Eddington systems, the spec...

We report results of Chandra X-ray and VLA radio observations of the Galactic accreting black hole V404 Cyg (GS 2023+338) in its quiescent state. V404 Cyg is detected at its faintest level of radio and X-ray emission with a 0.5–10 keV unabsorbed luminosity of 8.3 × 10 (d/3.5 kpc) erg s. The X-ray spectrum fit with an absorbed power-law model yields a photon index of 2.17 ± 0.13. Contrary to pre...
متن کاملThe Blandford-znajek Mechanism and Emission from Isolated Accreting Black Holes
In the presence of a magnetic field, rotational energy can be extracted from black holes via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We use self-similar advection dominated accretion (ADAF) models to estimate the efficiency of this mechanism for black holes accreting from geometrically thick disks, in the light of recent magnetohydrodynamic disk simulations, and show that the power from electromagnetic...
متن کاملX-ray and radio emission in the nuclei of radio galaxies and the disk-jet connection
It appears that relativistic jets are produced by accreting black holes. We might therefore expect that events observed in jets, such as the appearance of bright radio knots moving at apparent superluminal speeds, originate as disturbances in the central engine. This is observed in a number of compact X-ray binary systems in our Galaxy, manifested as changes in the X-ray emission state followed...
متن کاملRadio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source.
The physical nature of ultraluminous x-ray sources is uncertain. Stellar-mass black holes with beamed radiation and intermediate black holes with isotropic radiation are two plausible explanations. We discovered radio emission from an ultraluminous x-ray source in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 5408. The x-ray, radio, and optical fluxes as well as the x-ray spectral shape are consistent with be...
